“I think it’s important for anybody out there to know that, even if you take precautions and do as much as you can, it doesn’t mean that you won’t be a victim and that it’s not worth feeling ashamed about. You’re not the person that tricked somebody out of money.”

“If you’re a victim or know someone who’s a victim, I really want you to release this feeling of shame. So one of the things I learned as a victim was there is so much judgment that ‘oh, I fell for a romance scam, I’m an idiot, if only I’d seen it coming’ and instead, reframe that to be ‘you know, life’s not fair, sometimes you get really unlucky’. And all victims like me just got really, really unlucky. It’s a lot of money, and it’s heartbreaking, but it is a survivable event.”
